Q. When will I receive my new debit card?
Your new debit card will arrive within 10-14 business days of ordering. Your card will arrive with additional steps for activation.
Q. I have reoccurring payments set up with different merchants. What do I need to do to ensure my payments are made correctly?
You will need to provide your new card number to any merchants who automatically bill your existing card. Examples of reoccurring charges may include: gym memberships, NYSEG and other utility billing and newspaper and magazine subscriptions. To ensure uninterrupted payment of these bills, please provide the new card number to the merchants as soon as you receive the card.
Q. What are EMV Chip Cards?
EMV is an abbreviation for Europay, Mastercard and Visa – the three organizations who developed the new card types. The new cards contain additional security features not possible with the traditional magnetic stripe cards. These features are projected to lead to a reduction in card-related fraud.
Q. How will I know when I receive my chip card?
Chip cards have a gold chip on the front of the card. The card will still have a magnetic stripe on the back.
Q. What makes the EMV chip cards more secure?
When a chip card is used at a merchant with a chip-enabled terminal, the chip generates a code unique to the individual transaction – the code can never be used again, making it more difficult for debit card-related theft.
Q. Do precautions still have to be taken in regards to my debit card usage?
While EMV technology is much more advanced than that of traditional debit cards, we recommend you still take similar precautions to those you take today. Precautions include:
Q. How do I process an in-store transaction with a chip card?
Merchants will have a chip capable terminal, which will have a slot at the top or the bottom of the machine where the card will be inserted. When making a purchase at these terminals, the card will be inserted with the chip facing up and left inside the terminal throughout the entire transaction. It may take up to 10 seconds for the terminal to read the data on the chip.
Your new card will still have a traditional magnetic stripe, but once you receive the new chip-enabled card, we ask you to begin inserting the card at all chip capable terminals to better protect your security.
Q. Can Chip Cards be used at ATMs?
Banks are beginning to transition to ATMs enabled with chip-reading technology. Different ATMs process transactions in different ways, below are some examples:
Q. Will anything change when I make an online purchase?
No. Online purchases will be processed the same way as today, using your card number, expiration date and three digit code on the back of the card. Remember to only make purchases at secure sites, with the URL beginning with “https://”.
Q. Will my EMV card work when I travel internationally?
Eighty countries around the globe – throughout Europe, North America (including Canada), South America, Africa and Asia – have migrated to EMV chip cards. When you receive your new chip card, you will be able to use your card as you travel the World!
