Phone Scam Uptick
April 13, 2015
We have had multiple reports of a recent phone scam in our area. People have been called by a person claiming to be from a financial institution or credit card company (M&T, NBT, Visa, MasterCard, etc.). The person indicates that there has been a card compromise or fraud detected and requests the card number and/or security code on the back of the Credit/Debit card.
Do not provide any card number information to the caller! Elmira Savings Bank will not call you and ask you for your card numbers.Contact your financial institution or card issuer using a phone number that you know to be legitimate. You may need to provide identifying information when you call your financial institution, but be very careful when receiving a call from someone who wants your card information.
The Federal Trade Commission has tips on how to handle unexpected sales calls and warnings about providing personal information. For more information on phone scams please go to: http://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0076-phone-scams#Protect
